Over the course of several years, I engaged in a handful of brand development and design projects in partnership with The Humboldt University’s Department of Sudanese Archaeology in Berlin. In each case we addressed the challenges of bringing scientific resources to a non-scientific interested public, creating engaging designs respecting the academic nature of the research while also speaking to the specific audience for each project; whether adventurous tourists, local schoolchildren or web-surfing Indiana Jones wannabes.
Developed the identity and web presence for the Archaeological Mission to Musawwarat, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the last remaining archaeological mysteries of the known world. Situated far from any waterway, the complex of buildings features centuries of graffito left by travellers passing by. The archaeological site required representation for both the interested public and scientific community.

Developed a suite of communication elements to help the research team of the Mograt Island Archaeological Mission connect with the local communities inhabiting the largest island in the Nile. Applying post-colonial research principals we created a website and book for the residents, engaging the schoolchildren with a book describing the research with relatable language, imagery and stories in both English and Sudanese Arabic. A coordinating website introduced the research team, the projects and significant points in Sudan’s archaeological history and their parallels found on the island.

Developed an open-source, visual database tool for scientific research in partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Scientific History. The aim was to make the research and documentation on the graffiti etched into the walls of the structures found at Musawwarat available to the general public. In order to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the interested lay-person, I was brought in to create the UX / UI, merging complex and granular research scientific databases with an interface useable by, as we described it in our brainstorming workshop, “ageing Raiders of the Lost Ark fans, surfing the internet late at night, in their underwear”.
